First, the Pittsburgh Steelers rob the Dallas Cowboys of the “Team of the Decade” crown in the 1970s.

And now those bums have ruined our Super Bowl party.

The “Stealers” beat the groggy New York Jets on Sunday and effectively sneezed in our punch bowl.

Arlington and Fort Worth were about to bask in the biggest spotlight in the world — a frenzied New York media onslaught. The Jets have underachieved since the Joe Namath days. This was going to be their year.

HBO’s popular Hard Knocks series featured the Jets in spring training and introduced the team to a new bunch of fans, myself included. The team’s controversial but hilarious head coach Rex Ryan is big news because of foot fetish videos that recently appeared on YouTube.

Then Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hired Ryan’s brother, Rob Ryan, as defensive coordinator, creating more local buzz.

Yep, Fort Worth, Sundance Square, Arlington, and North Texas were going to get the Big Apple treatment. Start spreading the news, they want to be a part of us, Fort Worth Fort Worth!

Instead, the Jets shot their wad against the New England Patriots last week and didn’t recover from their hangover until the second half of the Steelers game. By then it was too late.

Steelers 24, Jets 19, Super Bowl hype 0.

Fort Worth Weekly’s most zealous Steelers fan is associate editor Anthony Mariani, a Pittsburgh native who bleeds black and gold.

Naturally, he sees the Steelers win as a good thing (kind of like saying the apocalypse is a good thing because it means we don’t have to go to work that day).

The Jets, says he, don’t have much of a fan base outside of New York. Jets “fans” are too jaded to bother coming all the way to Texas for a silly football game.

The storied histories of the Steelers and opponent Green Bay Packers have earned both teams a national fan base. The last time the Steelers played in Irving, Mariani attended and said half the stadium was wearing black and gold.

“We’re lucky to have two teams with maniacal fan bases that will follow their teams down here and spend a lot of money,” he said.

go steelers…yawn…whoopee….

  1. Jets versus Bears would have been the best match up for the spectacle that is the Super Bowl. Instead we got the Pittsburgh “Four Yards And A Cloud Of Dust” Steelers and the Green Bay “Who Gives A Crap” Packers. It’s official: Jerry Jones has been cursed by the football gods.

  2. Think of it this way: What would the fans of the last four teams be like if they were drunk?

Bears fans: Surly and belligerent; possibly willing to fight.
Jets fans: Surly, belligerent, and self-loathing; absolutely willing to fight.

Packers and Steelers fans: Jolly and festive, may even buy you drinks.

  3. The Steelers are a great team with a HUGE fan base willing to travel. I’ll take a city full of Yenzers over a city full of NY snobs ANY day of the week.

    Here we go Steelers!

  4. The two best teams made it. And Ft. Worth is lucky to be hosting the better of the two. It’s going to be a great week in Cawh Tahwn! Go Stillers!

  5. The Steelers have the largest traveling fan base in the NFL and arguably the most loyal fan base of any of the playoff teams. Fort Worth hit the jackpot by getting them here. The area will be nothing but a see of Black and Gold for 2 weeks. Jerry might not like seeing the Steelers possibly lift their 7th Lombardi in his stadium, but his pocketbook will. Bottom line, this may be the best SuperBowl ever with the 2 most storied franchises EVER.
    Packers Team of the 60’s
Steelers, Team of the 70’s (and with a win, THIS decade)

    Enjoy the fans!!

  6. cry baby cry baby. Steelers and Packers kicked Cowboys’ ass real bad last time each one played against those idiots. I hope the Steelers win and dance in that stadium and after finishing they tear down that toilet form stadium and disappear the local team or sell it to LA.
