So you think you have it bad being trapped at home by the ice? “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams just conducted a brief on-air phone interview with one Mary Thornberry, a 76 year old woman who reportedly moved from Fort Worth to Cairo many years ago to study ancient Egyptian culture.

As pro- and anti-Mubarak protesters clash in the streets outside, Ms. Thornberry is stuck inside her apartment with only, she told Williams, a walking stick, a rolling pin, and a sharp knife to protect herself. She says that men have been periodically pounding on her door and trying to break it down. She sounds remarkably calm. Again, all this is according to NBC national news. Stay tuned for developments…

  1. Anyone living outside of the U.S., or venturing out, is there at their own risk. The world is in a mess everywhere. A 76 yr. old woman should have already been home, and certainly not there by herself. A little common sense please.

  2. There is nothing wrong with being in a foreign country to study culture and history. I would have loved to be in her position to visit all the marvelous, exciting and historical places where our world had a beginning. If you get caught up in this rioting and violence, it’s BAD, but you certainly didn’t go there while it was about to happen, and if you can’t see into the future, what are you anyway, a victim, that’s what!

  3. Great news: “NBC Nightly News” just reported that Ms. Thornberry was escorted out of her apartment after midnight (and after curfew) by unidentified good samaritans last night and taken to a hotel in a safer part of Cairo.
