Rick Perry has his panties in a wad over the federal government. Again. What did the Obama administration do this time? Surely they took away some hard-working Texan’s firearm, or ran some small business into the ground because it was releasing God-fearing emissions into the atmosphere. At the very least, they must’ve passed an elitist resolution declaring polo superior to football.

None of the above. Gov. Secession is demanding that the federal government pony up more emergency funds after Texas’s wildfire devastation. “It is not only the responsibility of the federal government, but its obligation under the law, to help its citizens in time of emergency,” he said.

That sounds effete at best, downright pinko at worst. Have the socialists finally gotten to one of America’s proudest states’ rights advocates? If this keeps up, Perry will be diverting state funds toward a “save the coyotes” campaign.

Fact is, the many people whose lives and livelihoods were upended by the terrible wildfires need all the help they can get. That’s what federal emergency programs are for. That’s what the federal government is for. You can’t build a new house out of Tea Party pamphlets.

  1. Not to diminish the losses, or the suffering, but Gov Goodhair’s response sounds like that old Bloom County cartoon, where Opus is talking to the farmers. The farmers are wharr’ing about the damn gummint, and ultimately end up with “And hurry up with my federal bailout check!”

  2. Perry speaks out of both sides of his mouth. One minute he’s saying that Texas is going to secede from the union if the U.S. government doesn’t do what he wants, the next minute he’s complaining because he wants federal funds for the fires.

No coincidence that he’s spearheading the drive to cut funding for public schools – the deVos family, a major contributor to Republican coffers, would like to replace public schools with private schools and a voucher system.

For those of you who voted for Perry this cycle, please, please, consider voting for somebody else next time. Before Texas marginalizes itself into oblivion.
