The backlash against Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has reached a fevered pitch after yet another mental meltdown against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Blotch praised Romo yesterday for accepting responsibility for his mistakes, but for many folks, Romo’s mea culpa lacks an upside. We’ve heard it all before. Doesn’t learn from his mistakes. He’s cursed. Choke artist. Can’t win the big one. Time to cut our losses and find a genuine leader instead of Staubach Lite.

Yardbarker‘s article “Tony Romo needs to find his inner Tim Tebow” even coined the phrase “pulled a Romo” to describe disastrous mistakes at the worst times in the biggest games. Maybe “pulled a Romo” will become as big as “jump the shark.”

On the bright side, LeBron James is breathing a sigh of relief. He was the loser everybody enjoyed smacking around until Romo became the punching bag du jour.

Locally, Romo is catching a bit of a break. His teammates assure everybody that Romo is still their guy. A Star-Telegram reader poll asked whether the team should replace Romo. Yesterday, most people favored dumping Romo. Today, however, the poll shows 35 percent prefer to stick with Romo (32 percent say to “blow this thing up and find somebody else.”)

As for myself, I’ve supported Romo from the beginning. I keep sticking with him even after he disappoints year after year. Romo plays like a champ most of the time. He just falls apart at the worst moments. I keep thinking he’ll learn from his mistakes. Isn’t that what people do in life?

Enough.

Last year, the team tanked under Romo and then came alive when Jon Kitna started taking snaps midseason. If the Cowboys lose next week under Romo, that’s it. I’m done apologizing for him. Pull the plug on the chokemaster and let’s ride Kitna the rest of the way.

Or start third string QB Stephen McGee. That way we’ll go 0-16 and can draft Andrew Luck.

HERES SOMETHING ELSE THAT ROMO FUMBLED.

  1. The Boys will never get past the first round of the playoffs with Romo at the helm. It has become more and more obvious with each season that he doesn’t have the mindset to win big games. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on Jerry Jones.

  2. The only thing is before you dump Romo you better have an answer at QB. The QB wasteland between Aikman and Romo was pretty ugly.

I’m not sure how I’d handle it. I know this. The chances of getting a super bowl winning QB off another team is hard to do. Drew Brees is the only one that comes to mind and he was injured when the saints took a chance on him. Other recent super bowl winners were all drafted by the team they won with. Rodgers, Rothlesberger, Manning (both of them), Brady.

I think Jerry’s biggest mistake has been not making getting an A list QB out the draft a priority. They went 5-11 three years in a row under campo and to my knowledge never went after a top notch QB. Romo has been good, but he was still an undrafted free agent. There’s usually a reason for that. This last draft would have been a good time to trade up and get the best QB available. They went 6-10 and were drafting pretty high anyway. Worst case would be Romo has a great year and Cowboys have a QB in waiting that they could plug in after a few years or trade for something of equal value.

I’m afraid this year they go 9-7 miss the play-offs and draft around 20th.

  3. Ding Dong Jerry will never admit, he mad a huge mistake.
We can hope Romo gets injured, something like a jammed finger, and can be off 18 months. Romo is a loser, and Gil is 100% correct about him and his skills.
