The sport of boxing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s an undeniable fascination even for those who find it a little barbaric. “Really? A sport whose basic goal is to give a person a head concussion bad enough to floor them? That’s legal?” The Fort Worth Regional Golden Gloves Tournament starts 7pm tomorrow night (Tue Feb 21) and runs nightly through Sat Feb 25 in the Richardson Bass Building of the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Tix are $9-$25. Male and female boxers from Fort Worth, ages 8(?!)-34, compete in novice and open divisions with an eye to participating in the 2012 Texas State Golden Gloves Tournament, which kicks off Feb 29 at Will Rogers.

  1. It is a crying shame for all the independent young men who actually won their bouts. Because the judges are pandering to the boys from an ex fighters gym, the winners are shown as losers. SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU DIRTY JUDGES AND GOLDEN GLOVES ORG FOR LETTING IT HAPPEN.

that’s actually is not the basic goal of the sport any more than it is in football, hockey, or any other contact sport. you don’t get points for hurting people in amateur boxing and concussions are rare. was this supposed to be promoting the event or trashing it?
