Can you imagine the kind of cojones it took to say “I’m going to start a gay rodeo?” In 1983? In Texas? Yup, the statewide Texas Gay Rodeo Association is celebrating its 29th anniversary this year, and the TGRA’s Fort Worth chapter is holding its spring Texas Tradition Rodeo Fri Mar 2-Sun Mar 4 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Tix are $20-$30.

Gay rodeo contestants and fans, both women and men, definitely don’t fit into the mainstream rodeo world. Then again, they don’t fit into the mainstream gay world, either. This charity event is about creating a bold middle ground, where riders and ropers try to earn respect from all sides by being exceptionally good at what they do. Very cool.

  1. Funny, I didn’t see anything in the Star-Telegram about the TGRA and this weekend’s rodeos. And the S-T is THE source of entertainment news for Tarrant County, isn’t it?
