A French film about gender identity with subtitles? Q Cinema doesn’t appear interested in trying to please Jane and Johnny Sixpack with its Spring Film Series entry Tomboy (2011). But if the warm reviews and international festival awards are to be believed, writer-director Celine Sciamma’s drama deals directly and quite compassionately with a very down-to-earth subject: How boyish little girls (and, by implication, girlish little boys) try to navigate the social milieu of the playground when there’s so much pressure to conform. The tomboy of the title, ten-year-old Laure (Zoe Heran), has found what she thinks is a simple solution –– she lets her new neighborhood friends think she’s a boy named Michael. But like most ten-year-olds, Laure doesn’t ponder the longterm consequences of her decisions, so things get, um, complicated. Tomboy has its Southwest premiere 8pm tomorrow (Wed Mar 28) at Four Day Weekend Theater, 312 Houston St. FW. Tix are $8-$10.
