Living your life as, say, a drag queen takes special courage. You have to know who you are and what you’re not going to take from an often unfriendly world. But life as an openly gay rodeo cowboy (or cowgirl) requires a big set of cojones, too. Being yourself while trying to earn the respect of your macho hetero peers is a tricky balancing act that’s not for sissies. This weekend, the 2012 World Gay Rodeo Finals returns to Fort Worth for three days of ropin’, ridin’, and whatever else folks do at rodeo finals. Events are Oct 19-21 in the John Justin Arena of Will Rogers Memorial Center. The best news of all –– it’s 2012, and these cowboys don’t have to be tragic like Jack and Ennis from Brokeback Mountain.

Yes, but are they tragic like Big Tex on fire? Say a prayer for Big Tex, and then create a “Binder Full of Big Tex” to commemorate his 75-gallon hat, 50-pound belt buckle, and lack of genitals underneath his Dickies work pants. After you’re done making the Big Tex binder, deep fry it and eat it in a spiritual manner. Howdy and welcome to my funeral.
