As the Amon Carter Museum’s Romare Bearden exhibit moves into its last weekend, Columbia University English professor (and exhibit curator) Robert O’Meally comes to the museum to lecture on Romare Bearden’s Improvised Art, a disquisition on the artist’s life and previous explorations of historical narratives. The lecture is at 6pm at 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-989-5030.

Probably the last play Shakespeare wrote by himself, The Tempest has lent itself to free-form adaptations, with its wild setting, absurdist comic interludes, and general weirdness. No wonder, then, that Hip Pocket has chosen to give the play a puppet-and-pantomime treatment in Lake Simons’ A Tempest. The play runs Aug 9-Sep 1 at 1950 Silver Creek Dr, FW. Tickets are $8-15. Call 817-246-9775.

The success of the movie Les Misérables has boosted the profile of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, so now’s a good time for Casa Mañana to put on the songwriting team’s follow-up hit, Miss Saigon. For our money, “The Last Night of the World” is a better song than anything in Les Miz. The show runs Aug 10-18 at 3101 W Lancaster Av, FW. Tickets are $41-76. Call 817-332-2272.

At the North American Reptile Breeders Conference & Trade Show, you can find all manner of snakes, iguanas, geckos, turtles, tortoises, and frogs. Hey, wait, frogs are amphibians! Why aren’t they mentioned in the title? Man, the amphibians get no respect. Anyway, you can see some rare specimens here. The show runs Sat-Sun at Arlington Convention Center, 1200 Ballpark Way, Arlington. Tickets are $5-15. Call 708-932-8044.

VHS nostalgia is a real thing, as Michel Gondry’s comedy Be Kind Rewind proved. Film buffs of a certain age pine for the technology that first allowed them to take movies home. Dan Kinem and Levi Peretic’s documentary Adjust Your Tracking delves further into this phenomenon when it screens tonight. The screening is at 7pm at 1919 Hemphill St, FW. Admission is $6. Call 817-920-9665.

When Eric Clapton calls, guitar players come flocking, which is why such an intimidating lineup of guitarists joins the rock legend for Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013. Everyone from Gregg Allman and Buddy Guy to John Mayer and Keith Urban are on hand for this Madison Square Garden jam that took place in April and is now being broadcast to your multiplex. The show is at 7:30pm at multiple theaters; check Calendar for locations. Tickets are $13-15. Call 818-761-6100.
