This article is an excellent example of how gutless politicians find ways to
line their pockets with cash through family and friends.

Anyone with a lick
of sense knows that certain company’s left unchecked will rape the very people
who can least afford it. Predator jurisdiction should be at the forefront of
citizen protection in any government.

The story was filled with unsubstantiated facts about the pawn industry. To
suggest that the pawn industry is unregulated is erroneous. Pawn is highly
regulated on the federal, state and local levels. In Texas, pawn operators are
regulated under the Texas Finance Code, Chapter 371, which includes at least 14
subchapters. The regulations impose far more than the distance limitations
pointed out in parenthesis in the first paragraph of the story. The Office of
Consumer Credit Commissioner oversees pawn operators and audits pawnshops
regularly to ensure compliance with the code.
What Cash America is asking is
quite simple, to be able to operate our shops in a conforming status at our
current locations, and to have a small degree of flexibility in the event of an
untimely incident (i.e. natural disaster, fire or change in a lease agreement).

Cash America and other reputable lenders provide a service to our customers
that...

Something is very odd here. I've never seen a pawnshop/payday lender go out into
the street and strongarm customers into the store. These are legitimate
businesses that Hicks is harrassing. So there are more in her district..unless
there are prostitutes and drug dealers that hang around exclusively at
pawnshops/payday lenders she needs to butt out. She could do better for her
constituents if she held seminars on how to better watch your budget and loan
interests.

Betty Brink’s story does little to distinguish small, short-term loans, often
referred to as payday advances, from other financial services and completely
ignores an extensive array of federal and state regulations that govern the
industry.

In Texas, Credit Service Organizations (CSOs) provide retail
financial products and services to consumers. From stores in neighborhoods
across the state, CSOs make sure hard-working Texans have access to small,
short-term loans; money orders; pre-paid telephone and debit cards and other
services to help them manage their finances.

Small, short-term loans are
regulated financial products. They are subject to the Texas Finance Code, the
Texas Constitution and no fewer than seven other federal laws and regulations.
CSOs are subject to the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act that imposes treble
damages for wrongdoing.

Readers should know that the average loan amount is
$350. Interes...

With respect to Mr. Killy's comment, anyone with a lick of sense knows that free
trade is what made America strong. If you don't like the price of milk at Tom
Thumb you go to Kroger. If you don't like going to a bank ( or are an illegal
alien or have bad credit ) you go elsewhere and pay the price for not taking
care of your finances. I'm surprised Ms. Hicks doesn't ask Mr. Obama to step in,
seems like he's having some success capping AIG salaries and bonuses.

The position of political candidates on this issue is obscene considering the
serious issues of unemployment, education, healthcare, etc.... That face the
residents of Texas and the U.S.

We are talking about the choices of
individual Texas families on how to spend up to $75 dollars every two weeks.
Less than many people pay for Starbucks coffee or vending machine snacks during
a similar period.

Consumers vote with their actions. In a free market
system, supply is dictated by demand.

If Texas families want the option of
paying less than two dollars per day to borrow $100 for two weeks, thereby
avoiding more costly bank and credit union overdrafts and alternate products,
their personal choices should be respected!

Does anyone else think maybe the
politicians and the media should be focused on the more serious issues that
confront us?
