RealMcCoy  - never shown range?   |60.241.21.xxx |2010-01-20 07:40:12
I think perhaps you actually *are* seeing Colin Firth for the first time if you
believe he's never shown much range. Over his long and varied career, Mr. Firth
has acted in any number of different roles in which he was a starch-collared &
uptight suitor, a naive young man learning about the world, a scheming playboy
and a psychotic murderer, to name but a few. Just because you have not taken
the time to see his efforts does not mean that they were unsuccessful or that
they didn't happen. The man has undeniable talent, and your article is rather
insulting.

I have to agree, Just how many of Mr. Firth's 60 movies have you actually seen?
No range? I think you have this backwards. One can count on a single hand (if
that) the number of dramas credited to Hugh Grant. More than half of Firth's
have been so. (I can whip up a list if you like) Hugh Grant plays Hugh Grant in
95% of his roles.
I have to say what RealMcCoy said, this is an insult.

I totally agree - this article is a tad shortsighted. If you only look at his
blockbusters, like Bridget Jones Diary, Mamma Mia, P&P, etc. then ya he doesn't
show much range at all. But seriously he's done at least 60 movies in his
lifetime, in which over half he doesn't play anything close to the Mr. Darcy
stereotype. One of my favorites is one where he plays a stuttering WWI veteran
trying to overcome his trauma alongside veteran actor Kenneth Branagh. Or
howabout Tumbledown in which he plays an embittered soldier whose left side
becomes paralyzed - he acts NOTHING like the suave britishman that we've all
come to know. Even more recent films, such as Trauma, where he plays a
pyschopath shows that he does more than just Mr. Darcy. He actually said that
before P&P, he was told that all he played were messed up, wierd characters.
Now, he's told that all he plays is romantic types, which is not at all true.
Oi.

Ditto realmccoy and griet1665 ... here's a link to Colin Firth's imdb page:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000147/
How many of the films listed there did you
actually see that allowed you to authoritatively proclaim "Colin Firth has
never shown that much range"? Why don't you actually watch a few and then
take a second try at being the expert on Colin Firth's range...we'll be waiting.
observer  - do not know wherof you speak...   |70.141.193.xxx |2010-01-21 01:30:53
I concur with former comments; it's obvious you're writing with very limited
knowledge of Firth's work over 25 years. Do us a favor and view more of his
films.
And then, to compare with Hugh Grant, is really a blow. Hugh is
Hugh, again and again, to this observer's mind.
PG  - you havent a clue   |76.85.171.xxx |2010-01-21 09:15:12
I agree with Real McCoy and griet1665. You shouldn't make statements such as
"Colin Firth has never shown that much range. While his close contemporary
Hugh Grant has made a career out of playing different variations on the same
randy bon vivant, Firth has made his largely by playing pinched, grouchy,
disappointed Englishmen" when you have no idea what you are talking about.
What about The Last Legion, Nanny McPhee or What a Girl Wants (with the
hysterical air guitar!). Your comment on Firth is totally off base. Would have
been more accurate to say that of Hugh Grant whom you admit just plays
VARIATIONS, unlike Firth whose characters are often totally varied. Again, look
at Firth's Tumbledown and Hostages. Look at his actual work.
Candice  - Where have you been?   |166.137.9.xxx |2010-01-22 14:39:29
I'm pretty sure you couldn't have watched more than Pride & Prejudice and
Bridget Jones to have seriously just stated (in print, no less) that Colin Firth
has never shown much range. Seriously? Where have you been?

Take a look at
Tumbledown for just one example. He was hardly the suppressed English Gentleman
in that one - and he was a BABY in that one, barely out of his teens.

Take
another look. You may get a nice surprise.
