Alex  - great job!   |206.55.181.xxx |2010-02-03 10:43:57
This is so awesome! Finally some workers speaking out for what we deserve!

Guys, ever heard of capitalism? If you don't like your job, go somewhere else.
Oh, I 'm sorry, you can't go somewhere else, work part-time, and still have
benefits can you? Didn't think so.

I work full-time, have no benefits,
can't afford private healthcare, and make too much to qualify for medicaid, so
take your whiny ass problems down the road and be thankful for what you have.
Damn the crybabies in this world are making me sick!

Steve:

You should be organizing to have more benefits at your workplace, not
condemning others for organizing for more in their workplace.

Capitalism is the
organized theft of the product of workers' labor, not a just and fair system.

In any case, the supposed "benefits" paid by Starbucks are rarely
actually seen by workers, because Starbucks deliberately schedules most workers
for less than the minimum number of hours required to achieve said benefits.
All of this has been well documented by the IWW here:

My health care benefits are $ 610 a month and they complain about paying $100 ?
and their job includes heat and air conditioning.
fellowbarista  - really?   |71.81.176.xxx |2010-02-05 12:10:29
really? we only pay $100 a month? actually i work for sbux, work about 40 hours
a week, and pay over $500 a month for my insurance benefits. medicaid covers the
rest ONLY because i have to lie about my husbands wages in order to still live,
due to my lousy check. maybe we are a little pissed at how they do things, but
for insurance reasons, can't quit right now. oh, and they in fact do make us
work when sick (unless we get our shift covered or have note from doctor) and
they did make the girl with swine flu work last year until she got the results
back from her tests, confirming it was in fact h1n1. so drink up that goodness
america.
maybe until you are in our shoes and know what we deal with, don't
judge us or call us cry babies.
oh and if you don't like that your job has no
benefits, what was it.... oh yeah, "go somewhere else".
i mean who is
really the crybaby?
these girls are simply standing up for our rights, as w...
Em  - $500? Really?   |70.252.217.xxx |2010-02-06 15:18:34
If you are paying $500 per month for health insurance through your job, you
really need to open your eyes. I work 40 hours a week at a job that doesn't
offer insurance to employees, and I buy my own insurance. I pay $220 per month.
I have great coverage, too. It sucks to have to buy your own, but you should
really look into it, if you are actually being gouged as much as you say you
are. Sounds to me like a little time spent educating yourself could save you a
ton of $$$. You don't have to use THEIR insurance!
otherbarista  - really really?   |76.185.57.xxx |2010-02-13 11:20:12
You lie - coverage for your entire family on the best and most expensive health
plan offered by Starbucks is $192 every two weeks if you bothered to take 5
minutes to do the health quotient. It's different when you want to cover your
ENTIRE family, including two adults. Have you looked around?? That's a pretty
decent price.

Notice "Em" said he pays $220/mo for JUST THEMSELF.
Jax  - Disclosure?   |99.17.41.xxx |2010-02-06 02:07:29
It should have been noted to readers of this article about the author's, Mr.
Griffey, long employment with Starbucks in the past. I understand that
sensational journalism might be a key to attaining your readership however full
disclosure on both ends would be nice as well. How can this be an unbiased
expose of the company? I just think your readers should know about the
background of who wrote the article that they are about to read. It might just
change the way they view things. Or does that not matter?

This happened to me, too, in this same district of Starbucks stores (run by Lisa
Noble, the district manager)... Had the flu, called around to find coverage, and
was told by another manager at a different store in the same district that I
should just go ahead and work while I was sick because "we're all doing it
over here." Sounds like more than one store to me!

Unions seem to be the only(well, one of the few factions) faction that believes
they are entitled to more. I'm sorry folks, but a barista is an entry level
job. Not one meant to support oneself or a family with. Higher wages and
benefits for unskilled labor only drives prices up, demand down and cause
businesses to close. Our standard of living in this country is out of whack.
If you dont like what you are receiving from a company in salary and
benefits...move on! If you cant, you need to do some self evaluation and see
what you can do for yourself to make yourself more marketable to an employer, ie
more educated. An old saying rings true here, "If your heads not happy
where your @ss is, move your @ss!!!" But stop the pathetic,
"Workers of the World Unite" cr@p.
