Luis Zea was scheduled to play this evening as part of Fort Worth Classic Guitar Society’s series, but problems with his visa mean that Ricardo Cobo is now flying in on short notice to play this concert. Douglas Carter Beane gets all meta with the celebrity gossip industry in his play Mr. and Mrs. Fitch, about a married couple of columnists who invent a celebrity and his exploits out of whole cloth. With Tony Stewart breaking Jimmie Johnson’s hold over the Sprint Cup last year, the drama is back in NASCAR racing. That should give an extra jolt of octane to the new racing season, which comes to Texas Motor Speedway with the Samsung Mobile 500 this evening. Geometrical studies in color dominate Arlington Museum of Art’s new exhibit, 5×5. The show includes work by five different artists, and though David Tripp’s rural landscapes are very different from the rest of the show, the other artists also offer up vibrant pieces, including Byron May’s 3D paintings, which require special glasses to view. The unique musical legacy of Frank Zappa comes to new life tonight when two members of his old band play with UNT students at a concert called Zappa Unlocked. Bassist Arthur Barrow and keyboardist Tommy Mars have spent the semester in residency, teaching students about Zappa’s life and work, and tonight they’ll perform several of his pieces, including Chunga’s Revenge and Cosmik Debris. Today is National Haiku Poetry Day, and the Fort Worth Haiku Society will join in to promote awareness of the 17-syllable Japanese form that prizes suggestiveness and closeness to nature.
