5 Greatest Rain Songs Of All Time

by Jeff Prince

“Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” played on my car stereo this morning and made me think of three things:

1. Willie Nelson is a national treasure and I’m gonna be one sad SOB when he kicks the bucket like his contemporaries (Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, etc.)

2. I love all this rain. Droughts in recent years have stretched water supplies and it wasn’t that long ago that you could almost walk across lakes in Benbrook, Weatherford, and elsewhere.

3. What are the five greatest rain songs?

IMHO, here are the five top rain songs of all time (at least the ones I could think of in two minutes and then track down on YouTube fairly quickly):

Starting with No. 5, here’s a pretty little ditty done by Conway Twitty, Randy Crawford, David Ruffin and hundreds of others artists — but none of them topping Brook Benton’s original version of the Tony Joe White classic:

Next up, the song that helped put Gordon Lightfoot on the map:

No. 3 is Elvis’ version of “Kentucky Rain,” written by Eddie Rabbitt:

No. 2 is the tune by CCR (and I’m not talking about Cross Canadian Ragweed):

And No. 1 on my list is John Hiatt:

Anybody out there have any better rain songs in mind? If so, let me know in the comments and I’ll post some YouTube versions of them.

“Thunderstorms and Neon Signs” by Wayne Hancock, perfect for trips through West Texas.

“I Love A Rainy Night” by Eddie Rabbitt

  3. Laurie Barker James says:

Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” I couldn’t find her version but I think Tina Turner works in a pinch.

Sharing a Constructive Spirit

Sharing a Constructive Spirit Modernism is sexy. And not just because Mad Men is set during the period of the style’s apex, the early 1960s, though there’s no denying the show’s appeal. No, Modernism conjures up an era, one in which father still knew best, women knew their place, an...
