Terri Hendrix
Live in San Marcos (Wilory Records)
Of all the talent cropping up in Texas today, Terri Hendrix is among the freshest. Unwilling to compromise her musical vision, the artist created her own label, Wilory Records, and has been doing things her way -- much to the delight of her fans -- ever since. Her fourth album, Live in San Marcos, gives 16 examples of why critics call Hendrix one to watch in the future. Recorded at the Cheatham Street Warehouse, Live in San Marcos shows Hendrix's lyrical and musical versatility, with songs ranging from the wistful ("Fair") to the whimsical ("Don't Pet the Dog") and hits every note in between. Her song "All Woman" is a vamping playful anthem about a woman who is "hard to handle, easy to hold," and displays Hendrix's full-throttle musicianship and a backing band that includes Lloyd Maines, Paul Pearcy, and Glenn Fukunaga. On the flip side, "Love Like This" is a tender tribute to finding the love of a lifetime. Hendrix attacks her music with an easygoing feel that simplifies life's complexities and, like her song "Goodtime Van," successfully tempts you to pack up and go along for the ride.
