Best Theater Troupe
Fort Worth Theatre
4401 Trail Lake Dr, FW

The established names (Stage West, Circle) featured, for the most part, solid entertainment. Upstarts Sage & Silo and TCU-connected Amphibian Productions show promise. Fort Worth Theatre sits atop this year's list, however. Resembling a school auditorium, the place lacks visual flair, but the play's the thing. Provocative, topical edge over crowd-pleasing fare provides the winning margin. From family ennui (Dimly Perceived Threats to The System) to child molestation (How I Learned to Drive) to high school violence (Landscape with Stick Figures), the company tackled thoughtful, often unsettling, issues. Uniform excellence in acting and the fresh voice of the Hispanic Play Festival helped as well. Unfortunately, envelope-pushing equaled tiny audience. That's a shame. Jubilee Theatre lands close. Without a misstep, their season offered the best pure entertainment -- certainly the best music -- of the year.
