Stage veteran Sam Mendes (better known as the director of American Beauty) updated John Kander and Fred Ebb's musical by taking its homoerotic subtexts and bringing them to the surface in ways that were taboo when the work first appeared. In a year when Bass Hall's theatrical offerings didn't include a Rent or a Chicago, this revival was the best of the lot.
