Best Classical Music Performance -- Ensemble Cleveland Orchestra at Bass Performance Hall
This performance under the orchestra's celebrated conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi, in May, wins hands down. One of the country's premiere symphonic groups, the Cleveland's strings in particular are a joy to hear, playing with a technical brilliance and beauty of sound second to none. The latter was enhanced by an unusual distribution of the sections, with cellos and violas upstage center with their sound boards facing out, and first and second violins to the right and left down front. The arrangement strengthened the bass line, which can get lost with so many violins working the upper register, and gave the orchestra a wonderful balance.
