Texas Legislature's vote to bury the West Texas nuclear waste bill

Thanks to local State Rep. Lon Burnam, who wrestled this bill through the House, and some solid lobbying against it in the Texas Senate by Mike Moncrief, legislation that would have brought nuclear garbage trucks from the East Coast via Fort Worth's Loop 820 to Andrews County was killed this session. Because the Lege meets for 140 days every two years (would we all be better off if it met two days every 140 years?) this is an idea whose time won't come up again until 2003. Don't get complacent, though, friends and neighbors, because this bill has as many half-lives as plutonium. Watch for its glow to show up again.

Readers' Choice: Phil Gramm not running for re-election
