Best Altruistic Group
Union Gospel Mission
1331 E Lancaster Av, FW

Ladling out soup, shirts, shelter, and the gospel to the down-and-out has been this band of nondenominational Christians' fulfillment of the Sermon on the Mount since 1888. Today, its well-tended Lancaster Street complex includes a large meeting and eating hall, a shelter for men, a family center, a women's building, a chapel, and a thrift store. Its kitchen turns out meals from chefs-in-training under volunteers from the Texas Chef's Association, a program set up to get some of these folks out of their world of hurt and into the world of work. The mission survives solely on donations and grants, accepting no government funds. That's because this bunch believes in both Jesus and the First Amendment.
