Billy Bob's Texas holds a rare Thursday evening concert to benefit The Parenting Center, an agency that seeks to prevent child abuse and act as a resource center for children who have been abused. The Metroplex's various Mars Music locations present a Karaoke Night Out, in which anyone can come by and sing the classics. You can use the occasion to pretend that you're a contestant on American Idol, but don't let your imagination carry you so far that you think Simon's there. Someone's liable to get killed. Saturday, August 24
Last weekend's talent showcase at the Mansfield Opry featured 100 bluegrass musicians. For those who prefer a bit more variety in their entertainment, however, the Opry obliges them this weekend with a variety show of 12 different acts. The series continues next weekend with a live music showcase for Labor Day. The variety show is 8pm Fri & Sat at 107 N Main St, Mansfield. Admission is $9-12. Call 817-473-6060.

Sunday, August 25
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra keeps busy this week with a tour of free concerts in various churches and community centers. Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts symphonies by Mozart and Schumann, as well as Ginastera's Variaciones concertantes, and Of Blood and Carnations by Theodore Shapiro, the 30-year-old composer who's best known for his scores for films such as State and Main and Girlfight. Monday, August 26
So what is there to do on a late summer's Monday night? If you want to support local theater, you can go bowling. Don Carter's All-Star Lanes and the Live Theatre League present an All-Star Bowling Party that will help fund promotion of future live theater events. Ordinary fans can win door prizes and meet members of their favorite troupe. The event is 8pm-midnight at 6601 Oakmont Blvd, FW. Tickets are $5. Call 817-877-3040.

A new book discussion group has its inaugural meeting this evening. The group focuses on books that are commonly taught as literature in schools. Whether you're seeking to reconnect with literary works you haven't read since school or examining these works critically to see if they're still relevant to today's issues, it's a worthy subject of conversation. Arlington Museum of Art is no longer holding its Word Works poetry event, which had been a fixture there on the last Sunday of every month since April 2001.
