The gentle climate of the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea provides the bounty of fresh ingredients -- fruits and vegetables, olive oils and spices -- that have formed the basis for the distinctive cuisines of North Africa and Southern Europe. With A Feast of the Mediterranean, part of Central Market's ongoing "Cooking School at Fort Worth" series of classes, chef Michael De Georgio demonstrates how to prepare some of the region's culinary delights, such as zucchini flowers stuffed with shrimp and feta, phyllo pies stuffed with spinach and cheese, and roasted spring lamb with garlic, oregano, thyme, and lemon. Class starts at 6:30pm at I-30 and Hulen St, FW. Fee is $70. Call 817-377-9005.

Spoken word performance can be either cringe-worthy or transcendent, and, as Forrest Gump would say, "You never know what you're going to get." That said, the energy of the folks who throw down weekly at Black Dog Tavern's slams is usually enough to make your heart flutter, if not soar. They're sure to be at their best for their Poetry Slam Finale, where they'll decide which four of their number will represent Funkytown at the National Poetry Slam in St. Louis this August. Dallasite Will Richey will be the guest poet and host for the evening, and qualifying poets include Janean Livingston, Michael Guinn, and Anthony Douglas. The declaiming begins at 7:30pm at Black Dog Tavern, 903 Throckmorton St, FW. Donations are appreciated. Call 817-937-8301.

Everybody loves a good disaster flick. Just ask Shelley Winters. The latest offering at the Omni Theater, Forces of Nature, takes you closer than you'd probably want to be to a variety of natural disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and -- gulp! -- tornadoes. The film arrives amid mucho ado over Hollywood's forthcoming disaster flick, The Day After Tomorrow. To mitigate the quiet hysteria, Forces also shows what scientists and engineers are doing to minimize the destruction wrought by these cataclysms. It runs at various times from now through Sept 16 at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, 1501 Montgomery St, FW. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children and seniors. Call 817-255-9300.

Since its inception in 1977, funky, laid-back Hip Pocket Theatre has presented live drama in a relaxed, informal outdoor setting. Over the years, it's become a bona fide Fort Worth institution. Photographer Loli Kantor started shooting the troupe in 1998, seeking to capture its spirit while pulling viewers into the actors' creative processes. Now the results of her exploration are on display at the Arlington Museum of Art as Heaven on a Biscuit: Extended Portrait of Hip Pocket Theatre. The show runs through July 3 at 201 W Main St, Arlington. Admission is free. Call 817-275-4600.

Geology: It's more than just the class you took in college to make an easy B. If you're fascinated by the world of rocks and stones, you might just be Crazy for Crystals, which happens to be the theme of the Fort Worth Gem and Mineral Club's 53rd annual show this weekend at Will Rogers. Also on display will be gemstones, polished rocks, cutting material, jewelry, beads, rock artwork, fossils, and lapidary equipment. Dealers and experts from all over the Southwest will be on hand to answer questions. The show runs 10am-5pm Sat-Sun in the Round-Up Inn Room of the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall, Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3401 W Lancaster Av, FW. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and children. Call 817-921-5227.

Now in its 19th year, A Little Night Run, benefiting the Youth Orchestra of Fort Worth, is the city's oldest nonprofit 5K race. Before and after the race, the orchestra will perform at the Shelter House Pavilion on the Trinity River bank. During the race, orchestra ensembles will be stationed at various locations in Trinity Park to serenade the runners. Proceeds from the event will help defray the costs of the orchestra's European tour next month, which will include visits to Vienna, Salzburg, and Prague. The opening concert is at 5:30pm, with a 1-mile fun run/walk at 6:15pm, the 5K at 7pm, finish line concert at 7:30pm, and twilight awards ceremony at 8:30pm. Tuesday, June 1
Hunger knows no season, so any time would be apropos for the Tarrant Area Food Bank's annual fundraiser, Adios, Hunger! As it happens, though, they're holding it this evening, at Joe T. Garcia's. For the price of a ticket, you get to belly up to Joe T.'s buffet, hear the music of Brave Combo, and participate in a raffle and silent auction ... oh, yeah, and have the satisfaction of knowing you helped feed hungry kids and families this summer. It's, as they say, a win-win sitchy-ation. (Speaking of which, dress is business casual.) The folks will start whacking hunger on its big flat head and repeating everything it says in a high, squeaky voice at 6:30pm at 2201 N Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $65 per person or $650 per table, and reservations are required. Call 817-332-9177.
