Hello, Dali!

'George Washington and Melting Clocks' is part of the Salvador Dali exhibit at FWCAC.

Dali 100 Years runs Jun 11-27 at Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St, FW. Admission is $8-10. Call 800-367-3254.

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali y Domenech is best known for his melting-clocks painting ÒThe Persistence of MemoryÓ and for the publicity-seeking antics that he perpetrated throughout his career. The Spanish artist was identified as a Surrealist, even though he was acrimoniously kicked out of the group by André Breton in 1934. (Breton disparaged Dali with the anagrammatic nickname of ÒAvida Dollars,Ó meaning ÒGreedy for Dollars,Ó while Dali dismissed the group with this typically cryptic pronouncement, ÒThe difference between me and the Surrealists is that I am a Surrealist.Ó)

If it's true that Dali's ability to hype himself eventually and irrevocably surpassed the quality of his work, it's also true that in his time, he was a blazing talent whose command of his medium matched that of any of the old masters. In honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Salvador Dali Gallery located in California's Pacific Palisades is touring Dali 100 Years, a collection of his paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and tapestries. The show includes everything from Dali's juvenilia to a suite of tarot card illustrations to his celebrated prints illustrating Dante's Divine Comedy. It's a rare look at a major artist -- and even more rare, it doesn't involve one of the area's big museums. The exhibit will stop locally at Fort Worth Community Arts Center.
