Legendary Fort Worth bluesman Stephen Bruton has passed away due to complications from cancer. Last time we heard from Bruton, back in January, he was in recovery and doing well but had to cancel a Bass Hall date. No word yet on the album that HearSay told you the singer-songwriter/guitarist had been working on.

‘Weekly’ scribe and local musician/author/blogger Ken Shimamoto, a.k.a. The Stashdauber, got the word earlier today.

Of the early Fort Worth scene, Bruton has said, “The thing about Fort Worth is that there was no scene there. No one was looking at Fort Worth, believe me. But there was great music there and always has been. It’s always been black guys and white guys playing together. There was this great exchange of music.”

Still is, Stephen. And will be for a long time, special thanks to you.

  1. I can hardly breathe at hearing the news, but you are free….and we will all keep you in our heart for a (long) while.

  2. Like Joan, I am floored to hear this news. I saw Stephen play at McDavid Studio with Geoff Muldaur a few months ago and he was in great spirits. Thanks Stephen for a lot of great music over the years. You had a great spirit and I know you are getting a great band together in heaven.

  3. I heard a rumor months ago and am sorry that it was true. Thanks for the music, memories and signed photo and CD. Your smile, laugh and new songs will be sorely missed.
    A fan forever,
    Susan
