Please, make it stop! Just when I thought we’d enjoy a holiday free of stories about that right wing fantasy known as The War on Christmas, NBC-DFW Channel 5 news ran a story today entitled “Christmas Cut from Fort Worth ISD Classrooms.”

Take some smelling salts and find a couch, people. The recently announced FWISD rules aren’t that draconian. Their main purpose is to restrict gift-giving during classroom time. Gift exchanges before or after class or during lunch are still allowed. Holiday decorations that don’t endorse a specific religion are a-ok. Classroom visits from Santa Claus aren’t permitted, however. Santa can be “in the school, outside the school, around the school. But he cannot be inside the classroom while the teacher is teaching,” said a district spokesman.

Really? So a guy can hang around the edge of the schoolyard in a Santa suit and that’s cool with everybody? I don’t remember St. Nick hanging around campus at all when I was in school. We would’ve thought that was a little strange.

The Channel 5 story did make me chuckle, though. The reporter interviewed the father of three Fort Worth ISD grade school students. The kids wore what appeared to be Boy Scout uniforms. The piece also included a family photo of the boys being hugged by Santa Claus. The implication went: What kind of monster would want to drag Boy Scouts from Santa’s arms? The Fort Worth ISD, that’s who! Oy vey, I’m glad I’m not a public school official.

  1. Mr. Dansby can’t control his friends now that his in charge. This is ridiculous and it’s part of the well known approach used by the administration: TERRORISM Bertha W. is a control freak person, and we still don’t know why is she still in the loop of incompetents.

This school district is getting ridiculous. How many times they have been challenged in court because Christmas and holidays traditions. They want to portray to the community that all children needs every single second for instruction when they have not realized that the curriculum framework is a mess and it is the main cause of the student low performance in State test.

Why so many children are reading one year below grade level? We are tired of the same ridiculousness in this school district. Sorry Mr. Dansby, you better reject the offer to be the permanent because you could become one of the worst superintendent in the history of FWISD. Let’s find somebody who can clean the house and do not use the children as an excuse to be on the tabloid.
    Here we go again.

  2. Dear Mr. Dansby, As evidenced by Maria’s comments, many are loosing faith in your ability to take decisive action. Reyna is still here – even after defying a Board approved budget, costing the District 13 million and continuing to hire retired Principals. This is simply the latest swill from Whatley. The majority of your supporters want a house-cleaning: Reyna, Sorum, Davie, Mendoza, Whatley, Menchaca, Dawson, Personnel, Recruiting, etc.
Maria has been a long time activist for change. I am sad to see she is loosing faith in you. You may be powerless to stop the corruption of the Board (Dickerson, Needham, Robbins & Jackson) but you represent our hope for change.

  3. Mr. Dansby is right on target with his directive to priortize instruction over any and all distractions. If students are to learn and the learning is to be effective, distractions in the clasroom must be minimized and if possible eliminated. Classrooms must, first and foremost, be settings where students can attain academic goals and experience academic success. Schools offer many opportunities for social interaction, but, the line must be drawn at the classroom door.
