TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY.
TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY.

More and more donkeys are wandering loose as their owners set them free rather than pay to feed them or euthanize them, according to today’s Dallas Morning News.

The vicious cycles goes like this: the drought kills vegetation, donkeys overgraze, owners must buy hay but instead turn the critters loose rather than shell out money for feed.

Nowhere in the story (nor in the comments section) does anybody venture the possibility of eating them.

There’s a modern social stigma in America associated with eating horses and donkeys. We consider them as pets or dependable work animals.

But that’s naive and impractical.

Throughout history they have been viewed as nutritious and tasty meat and are still eaten in many parts of the world. There’s nothing wrong with donkey or horse meat.

My point is this: If you are too broke to buy hay for your donkey, then you must be down on your luck. It makes sense that 150 pounds of fresh, lean, protein-packed meat would really help out in hard times.

On the other hand, if you’re not broke enough to appreciate a freezer full of free meat, then you’re probably capable of feeding your donkey.

Same goes with dogs.

For instance, I didn’t feel like buying Gravy Train for my mutt, Hazel Jean, any more. So I ate her. I’m no hypocrite.
