Congratulations to multimedia artist Tim Harding, filmmaker David Lowery, and painter Devon Nowlin, who have been chosen by a committee of esteemed local-culture professionals as Fort Worth Weekly’s 2012 Visionary Awards winners. For Harding’s, Lowery’s, and Nowlin’s outstanding artwork and to help them continue producing exceptional art, they each will receive $500 from the Weekly.

To fete the winners, we invite the community to gather on Thursday, Mar. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Artspace 111 (111 Hampton St., downtown, 817-692-3228) for an awards presentation, food from Reata Restaurant, lots of refreshments (beer, wine, liquor), and an unplugged performance by one of Fort Worth’s most popular and progressive bands, Telegraph Canyon. Tickets are $20 per person or $30 per couple and can be purchased either at the door or online at www.spunetickets.com. All proceeds will go back into the Visionary Awards Fund.

As part of the annual Visionary Awards, there also is the Rahr & Sons Brewing Company Visionary Brew label contest. Attendees will be able to vote on their favorite of the top five entries from the dozens we’ve received. The winner will be announced toward the end of the evening, and the label and beer will be unveiled at a party around Fall Gallery Night.

We hope you’ll join us at our Second Annual Visionary Awards, and congratulations again to the winners.

ABOUT THE WINNERS
The only Fort Worth artist chosen to participate in the Texas Biennial last year, Tim Harding is an edgy multimedia artist who’s exhibited widely and whose often-sculptural-graffiti-esque style is singular and honest (often to a brutal degree).

Like most of Tim Harding's work, his massive piece "Don't Forget to Dot the 'I' in 'Power' " (detail) dazzles.

Filmmaker David Lowery has worked as an editor and cinematographer for nationally prominent directors as well as directed his own feature film, St. Nick (shot in Fort Worth), that won rave reviews at film festivals. Lowery’s work has screened at numerous festivals, most notably Sundance and South By Southwest, and has won numerous awards. He’s from Dallas but has spent enough time in Fort Worth (professionally and personally) to qualify as a local.

David Lowery's St. Nick might be one of the best films ever shot in Fort Worth.

Devon Nowlin is a photorealist painter whose work occasionally verges on surreality but never sinks to stylistic heavy-handedness. Having recently earned her MFA from TCU, Nowlin is now assistant gallery manager at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts.

Devon Nowlin's moody, fantastic painting "Double or Nothing" is emblematic of her semi-surreal style.

  1. A deserving cadre of badasses. Congrats all around. I vote that these artists works get full reviews the next time they exhibit, even if it’s not in Funkytown.

  2. Don’t you know that Mariani reviews shows only by that Chris Blay cat and by members of Blay’s nefarious “inner circle”?!
