Can we expect a revival of interest in movies on VHS the way music on vinyl has enjoyed such a wave in the digital era? Eh, probably not. The VHS format is clunky to store and smeary to watch. But such obsolescence and obscurity are all part of the appeal for the Fort Worth d.i.y. venue 1919 Hemphill, which hosts its first Video Boom screening 8pm tomorrow night (Thu Feb 21). The ultra-casual event is free.

The idea of Video Boom is to regularly show movies on VHS that didn’t survive to the DVD or online streaming formats. First up is 1997’s Masterminds, which features a forgotten teen actor named Vincent Kartheiser (pictured above) as a computer hacker who spoils a kidnapping plot by Patrick “Captain Pickard” Stewart. It’s possible that Masterminds is a neglected masterpiece tragically lost in entertainment technology transition. More than likely, though, it’s an excuse to laugh at how computers ––– and everybody’s hair –– looked 16 years ago.

  1. Video Boom had done three screenings at 1919 Hemphill over the past two years. We’ve also done screenings at Spiral Diner, Avoca, Texas Theatre and underneath a bridge in Trinity Park. Just wanted to get the facts right. And now that I have moved to Indiana we simultaneously do screenings in both states. woo!

  2. “Forgotten teen actor vincent Kartheiser”

Actually mr Kartheiser is more well known as an adult actor. “mad men”, “angel”, etc.
