The Fort Worth City Council holds the fate of a historic neighborhood in its hands tonight.

The Council is set to decide whether to approve a zoning change that would allow Christ Chapel Church to continue expanding its footprint into Arlington Heights.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1000 Throckmorton St.

The mammoth Christ Chapel Church near the intersection of I-30 and Montgomery Street has steadily encroached on the adjoining Arlington Heights neighborhood over the years (“Crying ’bout the Chapel,” Sept. 5, 2012).

Neighbors have grown more and more upset over the past decade as the church bought up whole blocks of houses and tore them down or moved them to make way for more church buildings and parking lots. About 50 houses have been removed over a four-block area, and the church has grown from four to 10 acres.

Neighbors describe church leaders as arrogant bullies who ignore their concerns. They say the church enjoys tax exemptions as a religious organization but acts like a private developer.

Church leaders say they are following the law and doing what churches do — grow, increase membership, and do good. The church has about 5,000 regular members.

  1. Yeah, doesn’t take much to realize that it does not take 10 acres to provide a chapel and parking spots for a following of 5000…..The people that be….are not considering thy neighbors…..but thy pockets….
