This Friday night (May 10) is the official opening of the Coyote Drive-In just south of Lagrave Field near downtown Fort Worth. This revival of a staple of North Texas pop culture from the ‘50s through the ‘70s couldn’t be timelier. Folks who’ve been prevented from using their smart phones and digital tablets by indoor theater policies can now whip those suckers out, because part of the point of a drive-in movie is not paying close attention to the movie. Distractions become part of the entertainment experience, though, really, do you want to pay the $8 admission fee just to park your car and stare at a phone screen? (The answer, unfortunately, is a thundering: “Hell, yeah!”).

Coyote Drive-In will have a few options I don’t recall from the ‘70s, like craft beers and vegan-friendly munchies at the concession. They’ll also be showing first-run 2013 releases like Oblivion and The Great Gatsby. (The latter, a Baz Luhrmann spectacle that’s been called “orgiastic,” sounds especially fun for a spring nighttime screening.) If I were running the show at Coyote, opening weekend films would include Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Mother Jugs and Speed, The Towering Inferno, and the RV vacationers vs. Satanists classic Race With the Devil –– movies I caught at a drive-in back in the day. But it’s time for people to create their own great memories.

  1. How cool. A chance for our children to enjoy films the same way we did.
AND a chance to learn a bit about the facts of life in the manner it was intended to be taught.

    • This is great news, I can’t wait to go. I hope they have a playground for your kids, cause what’s more annoying than people on their cell phones?
