No Lolaspalooza? No problem. In place of the erstwhile annual festival by and at Lola’s Saloon (2736 W 6th St, 817-877-0666), Brainhole Fest offers 30 bands Fri-Sun. The inaugural event is the, um, brainchild of Sammy Kidd, frontman for tough garage-rockers Mean Motor Scooter and owner/founder of Brainhole Tapes, a cassette record label. War Party, Sealion, Loafers, Dead Mockingbirds, I Happy Am, Henry the Archer, Bellringer, The Sex Rynos, and Phantom Sensation are among the headliners. Which doesn’t mean some earlier acts aren’t worth cracking open a beer early for, including Better Now (7pm Fri), Caliche Burnout (3pm Sat), Dead Words (7pm Sat), and The Fibs (4pm Sun). Cover is $12/day or $30 for all three. Eighteen and up only. Which brings up another point …

Seeking New HearSay

It’s time for a fresh voice. Every week for the past 15 years (save for the occasional vacation), I have been writing about Fort Worth music in this space and have enjoyed my time immensely. However, now that I have eclipsed middle age and have middle-age responsibilities (at work and at home), I don’t feel I can give the local scene the kind of serious yet lighthearted (and snarky) coverage it deserves. That’s why I’m looking for someone to replace me as HearSay.

The chief criterion is that you’re a writer, not a music snob or scenester who just so happens to know how to type. The point of the job is to entertain smart readers with smart (“smart-ish”?) stories. As a prospective candidate, you’re just as likely to be found reading The AV Club and Pitchfork as you are Harper’s, The Paris Review, and n+1. If you’d rather promote your friends’ projects or sell things, please direct your inquiries to associate publisher michael.newquist@fwweekly.com. Otherwise, I’ll be accepting column pitches at anthony@fwweekly.com. Just send me a hundred words or so on three or four topics/artists/events you’d like to write about, and I’ll be able to tell from your letter whether or not you’re up to the task. We’ll talk pay if you make it to Round 2. Hope to hear from you soon. Once again, email anthony@fwweekly.com.
