Wed 30 – The Jewish feast of Sukkot is underway, so UNT is screening The Fixer, John Frankenheimer’s 1968 depiction of the 1911 incident in which a Russian Jew was wrongly imprisoned for the alleged ritual murder of a Christian boy. This little-seen film by the director of The Manchurian Candidate and Seconds screens at 6pm at UNT’s Eagle Student Services Center, 1147 Union Cir, Denton. Admission is free. Call 940-565-8926.

 

Thurs 1- A family heirloom and Holocaust relic winds up bringing out all the pettiness and family dysfunction in a Jewish man’s descendants in Joshua Harmon’s provocatively titled Bad Jews. This black comedy debuted in New York a couple of years ago and won praise for its ferocious wit. The play, which kicks off Stage West’s 2015-16 season, runs today thru Nov 1 at 821 W Vickery Av, FW. Fri 2 – Based in Austin, the Texas Archive of the Moving Image does important work trying to preserve locally made home movies and short films as remnants of the state’s history. This weekend, the organization is holding a Texas Film Round-up, showing various artifacts they have, including a film of Loretta Lynn giving a performance in Fort Worth in the 1960s. Sat 3 – The Atrium Quartet, a Berlin-based ensemble that plays mostly on 18th-century instruments, returns to Fort Worth at the behest of the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth to play Shostakovich’s impassioned Fourth String Quartet, Ligeti’s early First String Quartet, and Grieg’s lively but overlooked First String Quartet. The concert starts at 2pm at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $30-35. Call 817-877-3003.

 

Sun 4 – Billie Holiday’s last days were sad ones indeed, the legendary jazz singer having wasted away from drugs, alcohol, and a lifetime of abuse. Jubilee Theatre’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill imagines one of her last concerts, though presumably this musical revue will conjure up the glories of this musician’s prime. Mon 5 – You wouldn’t think anything had been left out of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but somehow they had even more footage on this three-hour film, and you can see it when Peter Jackson’s 2012 saga returns to the big screen in a special extended edition at 7:30pm at various theaters; check Calendar for locations. Tue 6 – Montreal native Marc-André Hamelin was recently announced as both a judge and a composer for the upcoming Van Cliburn Piano Competition. Tonight you can see him play music by Mozart, Schubert, and Debussy, as well as his own Variations on a Theme by Paganini, so you can get an idea of the music he writes as well.
