Friday
Bluegrass fans, if you’re sitting home this Fri, Oct 9, you’ll miss Bella White at Tulips FTW (112 St. Louis Av, Fort Worth, 817-367-9789). Don’t do that! Come to this show! The Calgary, Alberta, native grew up listening to traditional Appalachian music thanks to her Virginia-born father, who played in various bluegrass bands, and she learned to play banjo and piano at age 12. After finishing high school in 2018, she moved to Boston, and she’s been tearing up the American roots music scene ever since. If you enjoy Gillian Welch and/or still keep the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack in regular rotation, pop over to Tulips on Friday. Doors to the all-ages concert are at 7pm, the show starts at 8pm with opener Georgia Harmer, and GA tickets are around $27.
Also on Friday, for 25 years, Atlanta-based Blackberry Smoke has brought their bluesy, country-leaning rock ’n’ roll to Southern-rock fans all over the USA and Europe — they’re one of those American rock bands that are big in places like Germany and the Netherlands, which also makes me want to hear a guy from Munich enthuse about .38 Special — and they’re coming to Billy Bob’s Texas (2520 Rodeo Plz, Fort Worth, 817-624-7117). Doors at 7, show at 10pm, 18+, admission is $28-127.
Saturday
When it rains, it … eh, you know how it goes. While the recent storms were a much-needed relief from the oppressive and long unbroken streak of hot af days and nights, the rain did force the Rock ’n Roll Rummage Sale (105 S Main St, the SoMa MicroPark, Fort Worth) to reschedule not once but twice. Event promoters Honeysuckle Rose are hoping for dry weather this weekend, so you can get to browsing all those vendors on Sat, Oct 10. Originally, the music lineup was Tiny Joy from Wichita Falls and locals Meach Pango and Darstar. The new lineup for the rescheduled market is TBD, but the event runs from noon to 5pm, so show up and maybe you’ll be surprised! The Rock ’n Roll Rummage Sale is all-ages and free to attend, and the bands usually start at 1pm.
Also on Sat, Oct 10, the Haltom Theater (5601 Belknap St, Haltom City, 682-250-5678) hosts a dozen metal bands in a bill headlined by San Diego deathcore monsters Carnifex. Most of the middle-show support acts use those illegible “briar-patch” fonts, and I’m not even going to try to list them, but the openers with plain, capitalized fonts are Roseburn, Pariah System, and A Recurring Drowning. The show is all-ages, doors are at 2:30pm, tickets are $25 in advance and $30 day of show.
Sunday
Need a reason to go to Dallas? Black Cat Records & Comics (971 Botham Jean Blvd, Dallas, 469-913-7079) and Other Voices are collaborating on a party on Sun, Oct 11, to benefit families in Gaza via Denton-based organizers To Gaza, Love Denton. The event starts at 6:30pm, and it features sets from local heavies Grim Realities, Channel Planet, and Sucio, as well as from DJs Extinto, Scarlett K, Orbis9, and Al G, with visuals provided by Mecca. Ant’s Tacos is the food vendor, and half of their proceeds will go to the cause. The pay-what-you-can suggested donation is $5.
Also on Sun, Oct 11, Fort Worth multi-instrumentalist/producer Ben C Jones now hosts a singer-songwriter Bucket Hat open-mic on Sundays at The Cicada (1002 S Main St, Fort Worth) from 5pm to 8pm (covers allowed), and he also hosts the Spillover open-mic at nearby Our Taphouse (1001 S Bryan St, Fort Worth, 682-224-0431) on Mondays from 7pm to 9pm, which encourages performers in other disciplines like comedy and poetry in addition to those playing songs.
