The pressure was on Christina Aguilera during the opening number of last night’s Grammy program.
Aguilera took a pounding the previous Sunday after 111 million viewers of the Super Bowl in Arlington watched her forget lyrics while singing the national anthem as if her throat were being chased by a bee.
The Grammy telecast opened with Aguilera and four other pop divas lined up in front of microphones, ready to tackle some fairly daunting Aretha Franklin songs. When Aguilera’s turn came, she sang as if her life depended on it and stole the performance. She gambled on a high note at the end — if she’d missed it and hit a stinker note instead, the Aguilera career deathwatch would have been in full force today.
But she nailed it.
And then she fell down.
