“WHITEOUT” (2008): ARE YOU SURE YOUR NINE YEAR OLD COULD DO THIS?

This week’s “Art” page answers that age old question: “But is it art?” Yes, it is – it’s Fort Worth “performative sculptor” Richie Budd’s art. Budd, a UNT graduate and member of the now defunct but still-discussed Good/Bad Art Collective back in the ‘90s, recently fired up the arts blogosphere with “Come On Guy,” his and fellow artist Will Robison’s installation at a New York art show that featured four very real frat guys partying it up in a glass case. (They were paid for their appearances with Natural Light, btw).

Budd is also known for some less deliberately provocative, more thoughtful installations and sculptures that attempt to address the relationship between human sensory perception, technology, and contemporary art. Here’s some great video of a 2007 show at the Priska Juschka gallery in New York. Here’s another glimpse of Budd’s work from a 2008 show at San Antonio’s Artpace space.
