For anyone who thinks celebrities can buy their way out of legal jams, this two-year sentence just handed to New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress ought to come as a surprise.

It seems even a guy with no money could have done better than getting two years in the joint after pleading guilty to what amounts to an accident in which nobody was hurt but Burress.

Burress’ reputation for hanging on to the football didn’t prevent him from picking an lawyer with stone hands. Attorney Benjamin Brafman might have fumbled this case, but he had a point when he said, “If Plaxico Burress were not a high-profile individual, there never would be a case.”
