Today (Dec 23) at noon, the Fort Worth Water Gardens (1502 Commerce St in downtown) will host the city’s edition of the national concert event known as TubaChristmas 2010. Close to 150 Tarrant County tuba and euphonium players will assemble, rehearse, and perform holiday standards for the crowd. It’s free, of course — think of it as a flash mob for brass aficionados.

TubaChristmas is great fun if you’re in the mood for a slightly different musical celebration. Tuba players often feel like the proverbial red-headed stepchild in orchestras and marching bands. They come to these holiday shows to prove that their unwieldy brass instrument can be light, versatile, charming — the opposite of the flatulent sight-and-sound gag it’s often portrayed as.
