If you read the headline and thought, “Jesus’ dog would probably pant, lick, scratch, bark, and sleep a lot,” you would be correct.

And if you thought, “Jesus’ dog would probably narrate a book about his travels with the King of Kings,” well, you would also be correct.

Fort Worth native and Austin resident author Joan Black brings us the story of Issa, a mutt who is trapped in a crevice, rescued and adopted by a young Jesus (he really was a savior!), and spends his days traveling with his master, the master.

Issa tells his story with the perkiness of a Canaan and the plainspoken minimalism so typical of Ibizan hounds.

Good thing Jesus’ pet wasn’t a goldfish.

Black will be signing copies of her new book about Jesus’ dog, The Gospel According To Issa, from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Arts Fifth Avenue, 1628 5th Ave. The event is free of charge and family friendly.
