Friday the 13th is associated with bad things happening. Tires blow out. Toilets clog. Freaks named Jason hunt down young co-eds and kill them one by one in increasingly graphic ways and sometimes in slow motion. It’s a hassle.

On the plus side, the legend of Friday the 13th actually considers it a day of intense luck – either good or bad. So keep the faith.

For instance, ULTA Beauty is giving away free stuff at a grand opening this Friday (the 13th) at its new store at the MacArthur Park Shopping Center, 7775 N. MacArthur Blvd., in Irving.

ULTA bills itself as a national “beauty retailer.” That sounds funny. Can true beauty be retailed? I guess it can or ULTA wouldn’t bother opening stores. (Can integrity, honesty, and sweetness be retailed as well? I don’t know. The press release doesn’t say.)

Anyhoo, ULTA’s first 100 customers get a gift certificate ranging from $5 to $100, and the store is promising free makeovers, hair consultations, and Dermalogica face-mapping. Also, ULTA is offering its “Enrich, Empower & Enlighten Scholarship” to high school senior girls in Irving based on their community involvement, leadership qualities and commitment to continuing their education, and applications will be available this weekend.

Let’s just hope the makeovers don’t turn out like this:
