File this under “Stuff You Don’t See Every Day”: This afternoon (Tue May 24 at 5:30pm), Fort Worth’s Central Market will attempt to recreate “La Tomatina,” the famous annual tomato fight that happens on the east coast of Spain. Bleachers will be set up for spectators, and many tomatoes have been specially trucked in to be hurled by employees at employees. The event began in 1944 as an act of defiance against the Franco regime. Here’s a short documentary about the Spanish event, which takes place in August. (“La Tomatina” in August in Texas would more likely turn out to be “La Hot Tomato Soup Day”).
