Animal lovers and passionate vegetarians probably don’t need another excuse to be outraged, but 1919 Hemphill will provide one with the 7pm Sunday (June 19) screening of Earthlings, a 2005 documentary feature narrated by Joaquin Phoenix that looks at animal abuses in slaughterhouses, zoos, scientific and cosmetic experiments, and other endeavors. The images are intense, needless to say. The event is free. A q&a will take place after the screening with members of the activist groups Mercy for Animals and The Black Vegetarian Society of Texas. Questions not to ask include: “Does anyone know the opening date for the new In-N-Out Burger on West Seventh?”
