Weekly publisher Lee Newquist has a great story about Fastball. He once lived in Dallas and frequented the same coffee shop as Don Henley. One day, Lee asked the Eagle, “If I’m buying one album by a Texas band today, whose do I get?” Henley’s answer was the not-yet-famous Fastball. Months later, the up-and-coming band was headlining Trees. The club’s owner let Lee backstage, where he proceeded to tell the band the story. The guys were elated. (If you see Lee out and about, buy him a Budweiser and ask him. He’ll tell the story much better than I just did.)

The now-famous Austin band is joining Collective Soul and Tonic 4:30pm-8pm at Levitt Pavilion for the annual Do Good Fest, along with the winners of the Beats for Good high school music contest. This day of activities, food, and music will benefit the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Admission is a donation of $10 or more at DoGoodFest.com.

Now thru Nov 30

Don’t forget that it’s migration season for birds. Did you know that you can help our flying friends have a safe migration? Now thru the end of November, try to remember to turn off all nonessential lights in your home from 11pm to 6am. By reducing the amount of bright light birds encounter, this helps them migrate safely at night, as it can be a risk where they can fatally crash into the sides of buildings and structures. Save the lives of migrating birds and help them have a safe flight across Fort Worth by doing your part and turning out the lights! For more information about the Lights Out Texas initiative, visit FortWorthTexas.gov.
