Fort Worth’s last prayer was squashed during last night’s American Idol competition, but Tim Halperin properly represented his hometown and deserves a local nod.

He sang almost perfectly at every opportunity, stayed true to himself, introduced his catchy original song “Holding This Rope” to millions of people on national TV, accepted his ultimate defeat graciously, wished fellow competitors well, and did it all with a smile on his face and an easy Texas charm.

He was beaten out for the  Top 13 by a few singers who get pitchy and go completely over the top in their songs. Seems the art of a subtle delivery is no longer appreciated. Fans of the show prefer dramatic vocal calisthenics that seem to be more about showing off than actually interpreting a song in any logical manner.

Oh well, to each his own.
