Episode 118: Smith Music Group hit my radar in 1999 when the Stockyards-based music distributor began releasing its series of Live at Billy Bob’s albums – more than 50 of them during the past 20 years. More recently, chief marketing guru DJ Dugan created the Smith Music digital channel to feature videos of national acts such as Asleep at the Wheel, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Robison, and Shooter Jennings. One of the channel’s newest features is the “Smith Music Sessions” featuring lesser known indie artists in the studio for live and stripped-down performances. Not long ago, I ran into Dugan in the Stockyards while shooting an episode of Toast & Jam and asked him to be a guest. He agreed and invited me to record a couple of original songs for his new channel. Well. Heck, yeah! The channel is designed to promote Smith Music’s distribution artists. The artists pay for session time at a local studio, and Smith Music films, edits, and airs it for free. The audio can be distributed online for monetization. Yay, money! We recorded my songs at the always stellar SG Studios with owner Greg White working his magic on the mixing board. Lukas Rodriguez’s congas and bongos come alive and make this song extra special. Thanks, D.J., for appearing on Toast & Jam and loaning me your Pat Green guitar for our jam. — Jeff Prince
